Art and Music at the Oratory

Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal is pleased to present the exhibition Les Mondes de Katia Makdissi-Warren [Katia Makdissi-Warren’s Worlds], as well as a series of concerts, in partnership with the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ).

Exhibition

The multidisciplinary contemporary art exhibition is the initiative of artists/curators Élisabeth Dupond and Julianna Joos. As part of SMCQ’s Homage Series, they invited visual artists to each create a work of art based on the musical creations of the celebrated composer. For this 7th edition, a woman is being honored!

Composer, but also music director and performer, Katia Makdissi-Warren was born to a Lebanese mother and Quebecer father, and grew up in Quebec City. Her work is the result of the coming together of Middle Eastern, Western and Canadian aboriginal sounds and music styles.

Eleven artists offer their vision of Katia Makdissi-Warren’s musical universe: Marie-France Cournoyer, Lorraine Dagenais, Giuseppe Di Leo, Élisabeth Dupond, Denis Farley, Carole Fisette, Julianna Joos, Mathieu Lacroix, Michel Lagacé, Gilles Morissette and Rolande Pelletier. We are grateful thank them. The result is eleven works arising from unique artistic approaches, along with a text from the artist, be it a poem, a comment, an explanation, interpretation or testimonial. All of which are compiled in a delightful catalogue.

Presented at the Maison de la culture Ahuntsic in fall 2019, the exhibition Les Mondes de Katia Makdissi-Warren can be experienced at the Oratory throughout the winter 2020.

At the Museum, Katia Makdissi-Warren’s worlds strangely echoes the permanent exhibit A World in a Crèche where artists and artisans from five continents interpret a same topic: the Nativity, the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem.

Whether through music, visual arts or the crèches, what is being explored here is a meeting of cultures, a quest for universality and a yearning for spirituality.
